All was going well.
The Spitfires had just outshot the visiting Plymouth Whalers 14-2, scoring three times in the second period to take what seemed like a convincing, 4-2 lead.
And then it all went wrong.
"Total and complete self-destruction," head coach Bob Boughner told windsorspitfires.com. "The vibe was pretty good after two."
That changed quickly, as Beau Schmitz scored the second of his three goals just 2:29 into the final 20.
His hat-trick goal followed at 5:42, tying the game at 4-4.
Alex Aleardi potted the eventual game-winner at 11:52 and sandwiched his second of the night around Jamie Devane's empty-netter.
Stephen Alonge (2), Grant Webermin (3), Ben Johnson (9) and Kerby Rychel (22) scored for the Spitfires.
Both Johnson (14:57) and Rychel's (19:34) goals both came on the power play, staking the Spits to their two-goal lead after 40 minutes.
Jaroslav Pavelka went the distance, making 31 saves in the loss.
The Spits wrap up the calendar year on a five-game losing streak, with a record of 17-19-3-1.
