
Spirit End 2011 with 5-3 Victory Over Greyhounds

This afternoon at The Dow Event Center, the Saginaw Spirit honored the State Champion Saginaw Nouvel football team prior to the 2:00p.m. puck drop on New Year's Eve. After, the Spirit defeated the Soo Greyhounds 5-3. Scoring for Spirit was spread out amongst four players: John McFarland, Vincent Trocheck, Josh Shalla and Garret Ross.
3:28 in the first period, John McFarland made a couple of nifty moves through the Soo defense and put the puck in the back of the net! The first period would remain an even battle amongst the two teams. McFarland's lone goal would keep the Spirit 1-0 at the end of the first period. Spirit had 8 shots on the goal while the Soo had 6.
1:18 in the second period, center, Nick Cousins scored for the Greyhounds to tie the game 1-1. Left-winger David Broll and right-winger Brandon Alderson assisted Cousins' goal. Moments later the Greyhounds received a penalty shot on the Spirit. Right-winger, David Elsner scored on the penalty shot to one-up the Spirit. This would not be enough to stop the Spirit. At the 6:25 mark, center, Vincent Trocheck, scored a short-handed goal to once again, tie the game. Left-winger Garret Ross and defenseman, Brandon Archibald assisted Trocheck's goal. At the 11:18 mark, a short-handed goal came off the stick of left-winger, Josh Shalla to one-up the Greyhounds. Right-winger Michael Fine and center Jimmy Lodge assisted Shalla's goal. The Greyhounds would come storming back again to tie the game, a score off the stick of Defenseman, Gianluca Curcuruto made the score 3-3. Center, Brett Findlay and right-winger Dylan Staples assisted Curcuruto's goal. The scored would remain tied going into the third period.
6:35 in the third period, left-winger Garret Ross got loose for a breakaway and scored on the Greyhounds to take the lead by one. Seconds later, Trocheck landed his second goal of the game to take the Spirit to a two-goal lead. Ross assisted Trocheck's goal. As 2011 comes to an end, Trocheck's goal would seal the win over the Greyhounds b a final score of 5-3.
