Third period barrage lifts Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 11, 2015) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers scored five goals in the third period, propelling them to their second win of the season with a 6-1 victory over the St. John's IceCaps Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Bridgeport started the scoring with a surprise goal batted and tipped in by Mike Halmo, his first goal of the season. Alan Quine and Kirill Petrov notched assists on the goal, with Petrov's helper being his first AHL point.
The second period started with a huge glove save by Stephon Williams on Jacob de la Rose. Big glove saves were a frequent theme in this game for Williams.
At 14:11, things got a little dicey as several players threw punches off a faceoff. Eventually, Bracken Kearns was given 17 minutes in penalties while Connor Crisp received a game misconduct as the third man in.
Midway through the second, a penalty shot was awarded to the IceCaps after the Sound Tigers covered the puck in the crease. Charles Hudon took the shot but hit the post.
Bridgeport could not keep the one goal lead as Angelo Miceli put one behind Williams at 12:44. Brett Lernout and Bennett pick up the assists on Miceli's first pro goal.
2:21 into the third period, the goals started to come. Taylor Beck spun around and passed a puck to Joe Whitney who got his second of the season. Bridgeport regained the lead 2-1.
Minutes later, after multiple shots and the team scrambling for the puck, Kearns batted the puck in behind Tokarski and the Sound Tigers were up 3-1 at 6:57. Assists are awarded to Ben Holmstrom and Ross Johnston but it was truly a team effort. It was Johnston's first AHL point.
Beck got a goal of his own on a breakaway, going top shelf on Tokarski with 9:58 in the period. Bridgeport now had a 4-1 lead.
The Sound Tigers added to their lead when less than a minute later at 10:47 the puck bounced the right way and into the net. Jared Gomes got the deflection to make it a 5-1 lead after tipping home Holmstrom's shot.
The goals just kept on coming for Bridgeport. James Wright beat Tokarski blocker side and finished the scoring to make it 6-1.
Williams made 33 saves in the win while Bridgeport and St. John's combined to go 0-for-9 on the power play.
The Sound Tigers continue their home stand on Tuesday when they take on the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
