Pirates Fall to Bruins 6-4 to Open Season

Providence, RI - The Portland Pirates (0-1-0-0) opened the 2015-2016 season on the road Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 loss to Frank Vatrano and the Providence Bruins (1-0-1-0). It was the first game of the Florida Panthers affiliation with the Pirates.

Vatrano kicked off his four-goal game with a goal just seven seconds into the first period, the fastest an opponent has ever scored on the Pirates; he was assisted by Alexander Khokhlachev and Austin Czarnik. Vatrano bookended the period with a late goal at 18:48, Providence's first power play goal of the evening, assisted by Tommy Cross.

The Pirates came out with guns blazing in the second period, at one point outshooting the Bruins 12-0. Kyle Rau netted Portland's first goal of the season at 9:44, assisted by Sena Acolatse and Wayne Simpson. Portland tied the game up 2-2 at 15:55 when Acolatse scored a goal of his own, assisted by linemates Simpson and Rau. Providence answered to take back the lead with a goal from Czarnik at 16:34, assisted by Chris Casto. Rob Schremp tied the game back up less than a minute later at 17:20, assisted by Rob Flick and Shane Harper.

Ben Youds opened up the score with a power play goal assisted by Czarnik at 2:41 in the third period. Frank Vatrano netted his third of the night at 4:59 to complete the hat trick on an unassisted goal. Rob Flick answered for the Pirates, scoring against his former team at 11:57 with help from Schremp and Harper. Vatrano closed out the scoring on the afternoon with a power play goal at 18:19 assisted by Khokhlachev to make it 6-4 Providence.

The Bruins were a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play, while the Pirates were not able to convert on their two power play opportunities. Mike McKenna (0-1-0) started in net for Portland, saving 18 of 24 shots from the Bruins, allowing 6. Zane McIntyre (1-0-1) manned the net for Providence, saving 27 of 31, allowing 4 Portland goals.

The Pirates are back in action next weekend for Opening Night presented by Bill Dodge Auto Group on Saturday, October 17 at 7 PM at the Cross Insurance Arena. The Pirates will face off against the Hershey Bears in their home opener and again the next day, Sunday, October 18 at 3 PM. Tickets are available for both games, call 207-PIRATES.
