Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries announced today the signing former Major League outfielder Chad Hermansen to a contract for the upcoming season. Hermansen joins Jim Rushford and Edgard Clemente as the third player with Major League experience to sign with the Canaries for the upcoming season.

"Chad is a great pick-up, adding another professional hitter to our already strong line-up," said Canaries Skipper Mike Pinto. "With his major league experience and great work ethic, he'll be a great example for our young players both on and off the field."

In the 1995 draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Hermansen in the first round with the tenth overall pick. He spent parts of four seasons on the Pirates big league roster before being traded to the Chicago Cubs. Following the 2002 season, the Cubs traded Hermansen and Todd Hundley to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek. In 189 Major League games, Hermansen hit 13 home runs and drove in 34 runs.

Bird Seeds: Two former Canaries are currently in Spring Training with Major League ball clubs. Alex Santos, who spent the 2004 season in Sioux Falls, is in camp with the Oakland A's. George Sherrill, who played for the Canaries in 2001, returns to the Seattle Mariners camp. Sherrill has compiled a 6-4 record in 50 appearances for the Mariners over the last two seasons. ... The Canaries will open up the 2006 season against the St. Joseph Blacksnakes at the Birdcage on May 12.
