
Third Annual Hip Grand Slam Challenge At Citibank Park

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 10, 2007) - The Long Island Ducks today announced that Citibank Park will host the third annual HIP Grand Slam Challenge on June 9, 2007. The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. and will feature the top high school seniors from Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the All-Star rosters selected by Newsday.
The event is sponsored by HIP Health Plan of New York. The Suffolk team will be coached by Bob Salomone of Eastport/South Manor High School. Salomone won his 400th game as ESM coach in April and boasts a record of 404-302-2 since taking the coaching reigns at ESM in 1973. From 1986-1994, his teams won nine consecutive Suffolk titles and ESM has claimed 12 league championships and 12 county class championships with Salomone at the helm. In 1986, he led his squad to the Class B state championship.
Holy Trinity Diocesan High School's Bob Malandro will serve as skipper for Nassau County. Malandro has been head coach at Trinity since 1989 and has led the Titans to Catholic High School Athletic Association championships in 1997, 1998 and 2003. Seventy-eight players have earned Division I or Division II scholarships during his tenure. The retired Nassau County police officer owns a career record of 285-171 and was named CHSAA Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998 and 2000.
Tickets to the event are $5.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Citibank Park box office or by calling 631-940-TIXX beginning on May 14 at 10 a.m. All ticket proceeds will benefit the QuackerJack Foundation, the charitable arm of the Ducks.
