Richmond Kickers News Release
The Richmond Kickers return to City Stadium this Saturday, August 14th to host the third annual FAMILY FEST and the Real Maryland Monarchs in the regular season finale. The festival begins at 4:00 p.m. with games, inflatables, music and delicious food while the pro game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a hand-held fan, courtesy of Union First Market Bank and admission is just $10 for the whole family before 6:00 p.m.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Kickers (9-5-5, 32 points) are in contention to win the regular season Championship and a bye to the title match on August 28th. Just three points behind league-leading Charleston (10-4-5, 35 points), a win this weekend over Maryland, coupled with a Battery loss to Charlotte will put the Kickers in a position to overthrow the USL-2 powerhouse on tiebreakers to finish the season in first place.
Last time out, the Kickers edged the Harrisburg City Islanders, 1-0, to guarantee a first or second place finish. Goal scoring phenomenon Matthew Delicâte notched his 11th goal of the season, to give the Kickers the lead in the first minute of play. Acrobatic goalkeeping by Ronnie Pascale and his steadfast defensive unit gave the Kickers their seventh clean sheet of the season to close the gap in the league standings.
Meanwhile, the Real Maryland Monarchs (3-8-8, 17 points) conceded a goal in stoppage time to the Charlotte Eagles last weekend to conclude their home season with a 2-2 draw. Former Kickers midfielder Ben Hunter was instrumental on both tallies, recording a goal and an assist on the night.
The Kickers and the Monarchs meet for the fourth and final time this weekend after facing off three times in a span of two weeks to open the 2010 campaign. Overall, the Kickers hold a 5-1-1 advantage over their I-95 rivals after posting a pair of wins and one draw in May.
Richmond Kickers Third Annual FAMILY FEST
The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host the third annual FAMILY FEST, presented by Union First Market Bank, on Saturday, August 14th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Richmond City Stadium (just off the Downtown Expressway). The festival will feature live music, food, arts and crafts, inflatables, video games, face-painting, a petting zoo, train rides and the largest inflatable obstacle course in Central Virginia, presented by Bounce 2 the Moon. In addition, join the U-TURN Soccer Zone on the field and participate in small-sided soccer games, juggle-a-thons and soccer drills throughout the day. The Richmond Kickers pro soccer game highlights the event as the Kickers host the Real Maryland Monarchs at 7:00 p.m. Bring the whole family before 6:00 pm and purchase a $10.00 ticket that allows admission for the whole group.
USL-2 Playoffs
As the top three teams, the Charleston Battery, Richmond Kickers and Pittsburgh Riverhounds will advance to the postseason with the regular season champion playing host to the league championship on August 28th. The second seed will host the third seeded Pittsburgh on August 21st to determine the other finalist for the championship game the following weekend.
Team of the Week
Following last weekend's win in Harrisburg, the Kickers placed three players on this week's USL-2 Team of the Week. Matthew Delicâte earned his sixth nod of the 2010 campaign after notching goal number 11 this season, 13th overall, in the first minute of play to close the gap on first place in the standings. Midfielder Luke Vercollone garnered the honors for a seventh time this season for anchoring the midfield and stifling the Islanders attack, while defender Henry Kalungi was nominated for a second time after leading the Kickers defensive unit to their seventh shutout.
