Real Maryland Monarchs News Release
The Real Maryland Monarchs close out their regular season in a match against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 14th. It will be the fifth and final meeting between the two squads of the season.
The Real Maryland Monarchs (3-8-8) are currently at the bottom of the standings are looking to end their regular season with a renewed hope for next season. On the other hand, the Richmond Kickers (9-5-5) will be looking to fine tune their game plan as they prepare to head into the playoffs.
The Monarchs are coming off a tough fought 2-2 draw against the Charlotte Eagles where a goal in extra time prevented the Monarchs a win in their home finale. However, the Monarchs will be looking to end their 2010 season on a high note with a win over a playoff bound team.
The Kickers are entering this match off a 1-0 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders, where an early goal was enough to hold onto the victory. The Kickers will be looking to prepare themselves for the playoffs, but could also see themselves move into first place after this weekend; a win over Real Maryland and a significant loss by the Charleston Battery could possibly push the Kickers automatically into the USL Division 2 championship game.
Real Maryland has struggled against the Kickers this season. After losing a tough match in their first meeting 1-0, the Monarchs came back the next to pull out a 1-1 draw from the Kickers on the road. Two weeks later, the Kickers' overcame a strong defensive performance by the Monarchs in a 2-0 victory. Their last meeting, a 2nd round matchup in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, was dominated by offense from both sides. However, the Richmond offense prevailed in what ultimately was a 2-0 loss for Real Maryland.
The Monarchs will be looking to continue their offensive successes from their previous match. After struggling to find the back of the net for most of the season, the Monarchs will look to points leader Benjamin Hunter and forward Jyler Noviello to continue to lead the Real Maryland attack. The Monarchs will also continue to expect excellent play from a defense, led by defenders Gareth Evans and Mason Trafford, which has only allowed 21 goals all season.
The Kickers will rely on forwards Matthew Delicate and Edson Elock to continue to lead the Richmond offense, which has proven itself to be one of the most potent in the division. Richmond will also be looking for defenders Sascha Goerres and Henry Kalungi to continue to lead a Richmond defense that has allowed a division low 19 goals this season.
This matchup has two teams looking to the future; one is looking towards the playoffs while the other is looking towards next season. However, this game promises to bring the intensity that a regular season finale promises.
