Charleston Battery News Release
The Charleston Battery (10-4-5, 35 points) takes on the Charlotte Eagles (5-7-7, 22 points) Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in a game that will decide whether the Battery wins the USL-2 regular season title. The Battery enters the final weekend of the season three points ahead of the second place Richmond Kickers. A win or a tie or a Richmond Kickers loss or a tie would clinch the league title for the Charleston Battery.
If Charleston prevails it will advance directly to the USL-2 Championship match and will host that game at Blackbaud Stadium on August 28.
However if Richmond were to win combined with a Battery loss then USL tiebreakers would decide the USL-2 regular season title. Goal difference could decide the outcome; the Battery currently holds a +2 advantage over the Kickers.
The second place team hosts a semifinal playoff match versus the third seeded Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, August 21; the winner advances to face the USL-2 regular season winner for the Championship game.
The Battery enters the game on the back of a 2-1 loss versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a game played last Saturday night in Pittsburgh. After conceding twice in the first half, the Battery fought back with a Tom Heinemann goal but could not break through again despite creating numerous chances.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser will have team and league-leading goalscorer Lamar Neagle back available for selection after Neagle missed the Pittsburgh match through suspension.
Saturday's game is presented by Piggly Wiggly with a free soccer ball for the first 500 children through the turnstiles. Immediately following the match there will be a fireworks celebration. Tickets are available for $10 - $18, to purchase tickets or for more information please call (843) 971-4625 or visit www.charlestonbattery.com.
Jersey Auction to benefit the Betsy McAdams Memorial Endowment
Throughout the game on Saturday fans will have a chance to bid on a 2010 game worn, autographed Charleston Battery jersey. This year in addition to the Battery jerseys there are also three game worn Bolton Wanderers jerseys available at the auction; the Bolton jerseys were donated by Bolton Wanderers Football Club. The annual silent auction benefits the Betsy McAdams Memorial Endowment.
Former Charleston Battery Chief Operating Officer Betsy McAdams passed away in 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Betsy was an original employee of the Charleston Battery since it's inception in 1993.
