Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Sebastian Thinel broke a third period deadlock and then provided the clinching empty net goal in the final seconds of the game as the Missouri Mavericks survived a spirited comeback bid by the host Quad City Mallards to claim a 5-3 win Friday night. Also Friday evening, the Family Resources Teddy Bear Toss saw fans throw hundreds of stuffed animals on to the ice after the first Mallard goal of the game; those teddy bears will be donated to children in need in the Quad Cities area by Family Resources.
Thinel broke a 3-3 tie by scoring what proved to be the game winner from the left wing boards at 13:26 of the third and then buried his empty netter with just 3.5 seconds left on the clock.
Thinel's late heroics proved necessary after the Mallards battled back from a 3-0 deficit to even the score, a rally that culminated in Mike Hellyer burying the equalizer- and his second goal of the game- from the left wing circle at 1:43 of the third.
The Mallard recovery had started when Shayne Toporowksi's tip-in cut the Maverick lead to 3-1 at 10:09 of the second period and brought a cascade stuffed animals flying over the glass. The Mallards pulled within one when Hellyer finished off a give-and-go with Anthony Perdicaro at 18:40 of the second.
The Mallards found themselves in need of a comeback after Blake Forsyth gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead with a drive from the high slot at 6:07 of the first period and Andrew Courtney and Kenton Miller struck just 36 seconds apart late in the first. Courtney buried the second Missouri goal from the right wing circle at 16:23; at 16:59 Miller fired the third home just under the crossbar. After Miller's goal, Jimmy Spratt replaced starting goaltender John Murray in the Mallard net.
