Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - The biggest crowd in Whataburger Field history (9,022) witnessed the biggest game in the franchise's history on Saturday night as Roger Clemens pitched six nearly perfect innings for the Corpus Christi Hooks.

Clemens, making his second of three minor league appearances, came out of the gate firing and never looked back. He struck out eleven of the twenty batters he faced while allowing only two singles in the win. In true Clemens fashion, "the Rocket" dominated Missions' hitters with an intimidating presence and an overpowering fastball that left hitters scratching their heads as they walked back to the dugout. Clemens left his mark in both the hearts of the fans and the Hooks' record books as his eleven strikeouts tied a franchise high.

Clemens is scheduled to pitch again this Friday in Round Rock for the Express.

Oh by the way, the Hooks scored five runs off 11 hits to pick up their six consecutive win, 5-1. The Hooks took the lead early in the first when they started the game with back-to-back-to-back singles off of the bats of center fielder Josh Anderson, shortstop Ben Zobrist, and right fielder Hunter Pence to go up 1-0. They then added two more runs in the fourth when Josh Bonifay, who led the inning off with his eleventh double of the year, scored what would end up to be the game winning run off a Jonny Ash walk with the bases loaded. Anderson then hit a sacrifice fly to score John Fagan and put the Hooks up 3-1.

Mitch Talbot followed Clemens' outing with three solid innings of relief work, picking up his first save of the season in the process. Talbot struck out four batters and allowed only one run.

With the win, the Hooks now need only three more first half wins to clinch the Texas League South and a spot in the playoffs. The series will continue with the Missions tomorrow night at 7:05 for "One Dollar Hot Dog and Soda Night", courtesy of KAJA and KMJR. Scheduled to start for the Hooks is RHP Matt Albers (6-2, 2.29) who will take on the Missions' Yorman Bazardo (2-2, 3.25).
