Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals hit five solo home runs on Sunday afternoon, in support of Chris Lambert's strong outing, as the Redbirds hammered the Arkansas Travelers by a final score of 11-1 at Hammons Field.

Terry Evans had two of Springfield's season-high-tying five home runs. Evans finished the day 3-4 with two homers and four RBIs. He now has four home runs and 11 RBIs in his last two games.

Starting pitcher Chris Lambert (5-5) enjoyed one of his finest performances of the year, going seven innings, while allowing just one run on five hits. Lambert fanned seven men, while issuing just two walks.

The Travs actually scored the game's first run, taking a 1-0 advantage on a Brandon Wood solo homer in the first inning, his 14th of the year.

It was all Springfield from there after. The Cards got a solo homer from Evans in the second, tying the game at 1-1. They took the lead for good in the third, scoring five times for a 6-1 lead. The inning, aided by a pair of Arkansas errors, was highlighted by a pair of two-run hits. Juan Richardson's two-run single made it 3-1. After the second Arkansas error brought another run home, Evans ripped a two-run double to right-center, making it 6-1.

Reid Gorecki pulled his team-leading 13th homer of the year down the left field line in the fifth inning, making it 7-1.

Gabe Johnson's first home run of the year, a shot to left-center, made it 8-1, against Arkansas starter Rafael Rodriguez. On the next pitch, Rodriguez hit Jarrett Hoffpauir in the back, leading to the ejection of the Arkansas hurler. Hoffpauir later scored on the second of Mike McCoy's three hits, an RBI double off the top of the wall in left-center field, making it 9-1.

Rodriguez (2-5) went 5 2/3 innings in taking the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits.

The Cards hit a pair of homers in the seventh against reliever Rich Thompson. Juan Richardson connected with a monster to center field, his 12th of the year. Two batters later, Evans went opposite-field, his second of the day and fourth in his last two games, rounding out the scoring at 11-1.

With the win, the Cards are now two games behind the Tulsa Drillers, who lost 5-4 to the Wichita Wranglers on Sunday afternoon. Springfield has now won three straight, with just seven games remaining in the first half. Stuart Pomeranz (6-2) takes on Chris Hunter (1-5) in the third game of the five-game series on Monday night at Hammons Field.
