Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - One day over coffee in 1934, Chanslor E. Weymonth, Cal Farley, and Roy Pool agreed that a Boys Club was the answer to the problems of unsupervised leisure of the boys of Amarillo. With $300 each, and a building donated by Mary E. Bivins, located at 313 Van Buren --- the Maverick Boys Club was born! The name "Maverick" is a cowboy term used for an unbranded calf-loose and roaming the range.
Cal Farley saw a need in 1939, to help homeless boys who were not being reached by the Maverick Club; thus, the beginning of the Maverick Boys Ranch. The name was later changed to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch to avoid confusion between the two organizations. The Bivins family, again, showed their generosity when Julian Bivins donated 120-acres of land at Old Tascosa to start Boys Ranch. One of the first young men to live at the ranch was a Maverick boy, Roy Turner. Mr. Turner has since served on the Boys Ranch Board.
In May 1983, Club memberships were opened to girls making it a co-ed Youth Club. The Club is now known as the Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo. At the present time, The Maverick Boys and Girls Club serves over 3,000 boys and girls on a year-around basis.
