Roadrunners' Rally Falls Short

EDINBURG, TEXAS ---- The Edinburg Roadrunners' comeback attempt fell short as they were defeated 8-7 at the hands of the Laredo Broncos Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncos (22-48) got on the board against Edinburg starter Eric Montoya (5-3) in the first with an RBI ground out by Mario Mendez that allowed Luis Ugueto to score from third making it a 1-0 game.

Edinburg (39-31) tied things up in the bottom of the first when Carlos Hereaud hit into a double play that allowed Wilmer Pino to score from third making it 1-1.

Robert Moron hit a two-out double to right center field in the top of the second inning and then came into score on an RBI single by Ryan Flynn giving the Broncos the 2-1 lead.

In the top of the third inning Mendez hit a two-out single and then moved to third on a single by Luany Sanchez. With runners on the corners, Sanchez went to second and the throw from Roadrunners' catcher Osiel Flores allowed Mendez to score before the tag was applied making it a 3-1 game.

Laredo sent 11 hitters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and scored five runs, all unearned, on five hits. The Roadrunner's defense aided in the scoring with two errors in the inning giving the Bronco's the 8-1 lead.

The Roadrunners responded with three straight hits to start the bottom of the fifth against Laredo starter Gustavo Vasquez (3-1). Pino got the third hit of the inning which was a three-run home run to the left field bullpen. Hector Garanzuay followed with a double to deep left center field and then came into on an RBI double by Hereaud making it an 8-5 game.

Hunter Owen put the Roadrunners within one run with a two-run home run, his sixth this season, driving in Garanzuay making the score 8-7.

Franklyn Gracesqui pitched an inning and a third for his seventh save of the season ending Edinburg's comeback attempt with a final score 8-7.

The Roadrunner and Broncos will play the third game of this four-game series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Pedro Flores (4-4) is expected to face Aaron Jenkins (0-1) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
