Madison Capitols News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Madison Capitols ended the 2017-18 season with a 4-1 loss to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Madison (23-33-2-2) finished the season in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 50 points. Cedar Rapids (26-24-8-2) finished the season in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 62 points.
Right wing Jordan Timmons put Cedar Rapids back up, 2-1, with his 24th goal of the season at 3:57 of the middle frame. Left wing Roman Ahcan carried the puck down the right wing and passed it over to center Nathan Smith at the bottom of the left circle. Smith shot the puck on net and goaltender Dryden McKay made the pad save. The rebound fell into the slot for Timmons, who was skating in from between the hash marks, to bury the puck into the open net.
Center Jason Polin put the RoughRiders on the board at 6:07 of the opening period with his 11th goal of the season. Forward Grant Silianoff carried the puck down the right wing of the Capitols zone and sent a short pass to Polin was in the right doorstep. Silianoff quickly released a backhand shot that beat McKay for the early 1-0 lead.
Madison tied the game at 17:29 of the first period with center Anthony Callin's 14th goal of the season. Forward Kamil Sadlocha carried the puck into enemy territory and put on the breaks shortly past the left point. Sadlocha connected with Callin as the center came streaking down the center of the zone. Callin skated in on netminder Jiri Patera all alone and wristed a shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Polin netted his second goal of the game, 12th tally of the season, at 19:19 of the second period to give Cedar Rapids a 3-1 advantage. Skating on the power play, left wing Matthew Thomson stood to the right of the hash marks before passing the puck over to Polin at the bottom of the left face-off circle. Polin grabbed the pass and found the back of the net to advance the RoughRiders lead.
Smith scored his 17th goal of the season at 4:18 of the final frame. Defenseman Jake Johnson grabbed the puck off the left wing boards and sent it down to Timmons on the left doorstep of the Capitols cage. Timmons centered a pass to between the hash marks where Smith was down on one knee to one-time the puck into the bottom right corner of the net at a 4-1 lead for the RoughRiders.
McKay (19-24-1-2) took his 24th loss of the season. Patera (13-13-6-0) earned his 13th win of the season.
Notables: Center Anthony Callin finished the season on a two-game goal-scoring streak with two tallies.
