The Diablos outlast the Wingnuts 5-2

The Diablos outlasted the Wichita Wingnuts 5-2 in the series finale from Wichita, Kansas on Sunday afternoon.

Starting pitchers Jusef Frias and Justin Young battled through the first three innings. Each threw three shut-out innings, with the Diablos picking up three base hits, to the Wingnuts two.

Bryon Smith sparked the Diablos in the top of the fourth inning. He hammered a three-run homer to left-field, for the 3-0 lead. El Paso extended it to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the fifth inning. Kory Drew lined a run-scoring base hit to left field plating Stantrel Smith from second base.

The Wingnuts got some offense going in the bottom of the sixth. Wichita scored two runs, on three base hits. Chris Colton and Stephen Pearson each had RBI singles, cutting the margin to 4-2.

El Paso got an important insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Bryan Cooksey lined an RBI single into center field, scoring J.D Reininger for the 5-2 advantage.

The Winguts threatened in the eighth and ninth innings, but stranded four runners in the final two frames. Mike Cervera came in for the final out, with runners on the corners and the tieing run at the plate. Cervera induced Bernie Dennis into a fly out, which ended the contest.

Jusef Frias (3-2) is the winner. He threw six innings allowing two runs off of seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Justin Young (3-2) takes the loss. He threw seven innings allowing four earned runs off of eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Brandon Hudson and Aaron Marsden combined for two and two thirds scoreless innings of relief for the Diablos.

Mike Cervera threw a third of an inning scoreless, picking up his fourth save of the season.

The Diablos will open up a three-game home series against the Pensacola Pelicans on Monday night at 7:05 PM. Ben Thurmond will get the start for the Diablos. The game will be broadcast live on www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
