St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 22, 2008) - The week for the St. Paul Saints began by losing courtesy of a walk off homer and ended by building a five run lead, but losing to the Sioux Falls Canaries 10-9 at Midway Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning as they sent nine men to the plate. They loaded the bases on a single and two errors and Tim Brown plated the first run with a single to left. Marcel Longmire followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Kevin Sullivan added a sacrifice fly and Brent Krause followed with an RBI single.
With the score 6-1 in the fifth Paul Smyth hit his first homer of the afternoon, his third of the season, making it 6-2.
Smyth came calling again in the sixth as the Canaries took the lead for good. Mike Bille entered the game to relieve starter Alec Shepherd and gave up a double to Will Smith and walked the next two hitters to load the bases. Ben Van Iderstine made it 6-3 with a sacrifice fly and Bille loaded the bases again by walking Patrick Reilly. Craig Molldrem relieved Bille and the first pitch he threw to Smyth went over the left field wall to make it 7-6 Canaries. They would tack on one more with an RBI single to Grant Richardson.
With the Saints trailing 10-7 in the ninth they made things interesting when Marcel Longmire hit a two out single to center. Kevin Sullivan reached on a walk and Brent Krause hit an RBI double. Ben Thomas' infield single plated Sullivan to cut the lead to one, but Josh Womack flew out to center to end the game.
The Saints now trail the Canaries by 3.0 games with just seven to play in the first half.
