Midland RockHounds News Release
In the classic (and classically goofy) movie "Caddyshack," Bill Murray portrays the assistant greens keeper Karl Spackler. While caddying for the priest, who is having the game of his life, Karl is standing in an absolute monsoon, flag stick bending in the wind, his slicker soaked from the torrential storm. When the father asks his opinion on the weather, Karl replies ... "I don't thnk the really heavy stuff is going to come down for some time. I'd keep playing."
Unfortunately, the RockHounds and Corpus Christi Hooks followed Carl's advice Thursday night.
The Hooks jumped on 'Hounds starter Pedro Figueroa for four runs in the second, then denied a RockHounds threat in the fourth. Trailing by that 4-0 count, the 'Hounds got back-to-back singles from Archie Gilbert and Alex Valdez to lead off the inning. Hooks starter Jordan Lyles then struck out Jeff Baisley and his defense turned one of four double-plays on the night to end the inning.
David Cook led off the fifth with a solo home run, and the clubs then endured a 55-minute rain delay. Observing the "Spackler Theory," the clubs "kept on playing" after the delay, with the Hooks doubling their advantage, capped by Koby Clemens' 2-run home run, his 15th of the season.
The RockHounds got some help on the personnel front, with infielder Adrian Cardenas and relief pitcher Mickey Storey joining the club from (Triple-A) Sacramento. Neither played Thursday night, but both players will be in uniform Friday.
