
Cards Fall to Drillers, 7-3

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals continued their series against the Tulsa Drillers Thursday night. At 29-28 one game above .500 with thirteen games left in the first half the Cardinals started RHP Brian Broderick against Drillers LHP Keith Weiser.
Broderick and the Cards started the game off right with a one-two-three first inning, only to allow three unearned runs scored by the Drillers in the second.
With the Cards down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Tyler Henley hit a home run that cleared the 400 sign in center field which closed the gap to just two runs, 3-1.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Broderick gave up a solo home run to Drillers leadoff man Charlie Blackmon.
In the 5th, after a sacrifice bunt by Broderick to advance Jose Garcia to second, Daryl Jones hit an RBI single to right field. Jones would later score an unearned run from a fielding error, which brought the Cards within one, 4-3.
After 83 pitches, three strike outs, and only one earned run, the Cards replaced Broderick with Thomas Eager at the start of the seventh inning. After 84 pitches, the Drillers replace Keith Weiser with Andy Graham who would lead them to their own one-two-three inning.
The pitching changes continued for the Cards as they brought in Francisco Samuel at the beginning of the eighth. To start the inning, Samuel walked Daniel Mayora, who later scored by a Wilin Rosario two-run home run to left field to put the Drillers up 6-3.
Matt Meyer came in for the Cards in the 9th and allowed a walk to Eider Torres and eventually scored the Drillers seventh run on a RBI double by pinch hitter Anthony Jackson making it a 7-3 game. The Cardinals faced Scott Rice in the bottom of the ninth and failed to score and dropped their record down to an even 29-29.
Springfield will continue their four game series with Tulsa Friday night. In game three, Springfield will send right hander Chuckie Fick (0-0) to the mound against right hander Greg Reynolds (0-1) for the Drillers.
Friday Night Fireworks will light up the sky thanks to AM Pyrotechnics for the third game of the series with Tulsa. It will also be Lawerence Photo Camera/Photo Day where fans are encouraged to bring their cameras to the ballpark early to take pictures of their favorite Cardinals one hour prior to the game.
