CHECKERS RAISE OVER $1.1 MILLION IN THREE SEASONS
The Checkers ended their playoff run this past Sunday ending a solid season on the ice. But off the ice, the club generated yet another excellent fundraising total for the 2008-09 campaign.
During the previous two seasons, the team was able to donate a total of just over $840,000.
Some of the special nights at Time Warner Cable Arena this year included Race Night which was held on Jan. 24th against the South Carolina Stingrays. Proceeds from the event, totaling $11,000, were given to Speedway Children Charities and then distributed to Victory Junction Gang Camp, Hendrick Marrow Program and B.R.A.K.E.S.
On Sunday, Feb. 8th, the team held the 3rd Annual Pink in the Rink. The game benefited the American Cancer Society, Carolina Breast Friends and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate. The team was able to exceed expectations for this yearly game generating $22,000 for the aforementioned organizations.
On Sunday, March 8th the team put on the 4th Annual Salute to Heroes game. The Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg EMS Agency, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office joined forces to help raise funds for families from each organization. The night also benefited the Hometown Heroes Foundation and many other Heroes related charities. After the festivities were over, $20,000 was given back to the very important cause.
On Sunday, March 22nd, the Checkers rolled out the red carpet for Ellie Potvin, a seven year old girl battling a rare childhood cancer called Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma. The Checkers teamed up with Ellie and her family to raise funds to help ease their financial burden and to allow them to provide the best medical treatments available. Donations for the event came in at just over $10,000 but more importantly placed a smile on a beautiful young girl's face.
On March 23rd, the Checkers held the 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation. The event raised over $9,000 for Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital and CheckMate Charities.
"Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital is so fortunate to have a dedicated and compassionate partner in the Charlotte Checkers. Without them, cherished programs like Arts for Life would not be available to make the hospitalization experience a little easier on our patients," remarked Nora King, nurse manager, Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital
