Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - The first Sunday home game of the season for the Erie Otters would see them welcome the Niagara IceDogs for the second meeting of the season between the geographic rivals. Erie picked up their first win of the season against Niagara last Thursday in St. Catharine's with Pano Fimis picking up the game-winning overtime goal.

It would take just under four minutes for the Niagara IceDogs to take the energy out of the building early, with Ryan Roobroeck (2) finding an opportunity at point-blank range. On either side of the ice, goaltenders Ben Gaudreau and Owen Flores would impress with a double-digit number of saves. Before the period would come to a close, Erie would grab a goal back in their favor as former IceDog Pano Fimis (4) would give Erie late momentum heading into the period break. A 1-1 game would hold after 20 minutes of play, with Niagara leading 13-11 in shots.

The Otter momentum would carry over into the second period early on, as Ondrej Molnar (3) would net goals in back-to-back games and give Erie their first lead of the night. While pressure would be maintained for the first half of the second period, it would be the Niagara IceDogs who would steal back momentum from Kevin He (4) would be in the right-place at the right-time to knot things up at two just before the halfway mark of the game. Momentum would swing back-and-forth, but the IceDogs would have the last laugh of the frame as Zakary Lavoie (3) would net his first of two goals on the night. After 40 minutes of play, Niagara would lead 3-2 in goals as the Otters would outshoot the IceDogs 26-25.

With a two-goal deficit and the clock working against the Erie Otters, the onus would be on them for a big third period to salvage a home win out of the weekend. Unfortunately for Erie, the next goal of the game would prove to also be the game-winning goal. Mike Levin (3) would snipe the top left corner of the net to put the IceDogs up 4-2 halfway through the third. With the net empty and power play in their favor in the final two minutes of the game, Martin Misiak (4) would give Erie hope, but it would quickly be dashed by Zakary Lavoie (4) into the empty net from center ice. Erie would fall on home ice 5-3 to the Niagara IceDogs, outshooting their geographic rival 38-32.

Erie will have a very short reprieve before another three-in-three begins. Erie will hit the road on Thursday evening in Barrie and Friday in Kitchener for the first meetings of the season against either. Saturday night will bring the Erie Otters home for Haunted Hockey Night against the Peterborough Petes for the final game of the month.
