Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - WiiildFlower, a singing trio featuring local teenagers Jordyn Mitchell, Kennedy Cook, and Drea Wallace, has been selected as the winners of the Dayton Daily News/Dayton Dragons national anthem contest. The girls will sing in front of a sell-out crowd at Fifth Third Field on Opening Day, April 9. The Dragons will host the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 4:00 p.m. as they open their 17th home season in Dayton.
WiiildFlower was selected from a group of more than 200 who auditioned to perform the National Anthem at Dragons games this season. Finalists from the group who auditioned will perform at other Dragons games. The team plays 70 home games at Fifth Third Field in 2016.
Jordyn and Kennedy, both age 15, and Drea, 14, are all students at Stivers School for the Arts.
According to Beverly Mitchell, parent representative for the singing group, the girls competed against each in previous years. After appearing at "The Biggest Talent Show in the Midwest," a program judge offered the suggestion that the specific abilities of the three teenagers would blend particularly well together. They began performing together under the name, WiiildFlower.
"All three girls began singing at a young age," said Ms. Mitchell. "It really started in church. Now, they are recording songs and are all aspiring musicians with long terms goals."
The trio performed as an opening act in the Urban Expo Music Fest featuring the Isley Brothers in Louisville, Kentucky last June. They also performed at the Hot 102.9 Birthday Bash.
The Dragons conduct national anthem try-outs every year in front of a live audience. The Dayton Daily News has served as the sponsor for all 17 years of auditions. Auditions are judged by a panel of community leaders including representatives from the Dayton Daily News.
