Calgary Roughnecks News Release
Calgary AB (March 23, 2005) - Ted Dowling, a key member of the Calgary Roughnecks which won the National Lacrosse League's Champion's Cup in 2004, is back with the Riggers.
In a move made just 24 hours before the league's trade deadline, Roughnecks General Manager Dave Bremner pried Dowling from the San Jose Stealth.
"I feel great," said Dowling. "To tell the truth I never really felt that I left. When I saw the guys again last Friday it was so good. I knew then that the bond was still there."
The deal is pending until league approval.
Dowling retired after the Champion's Cup to spend more time with his family.
But when San Jose came calling last month after the birth of his second daughter, he opted to renew his career.
In only four games with the Stealth, Dowling registered 10 goals and four assists. Five of those goals came in last week's losses (15-11 and 11-10) to the Roughnecks.
"I really feel sorry for the people in San Jose," said the NLL's all-time fifth leading scorer. "They've got the personnel to have a great team, but for some reason or other it's just not happening for them. It's tragic really."
Last year, Dowling was the Roughnecks' third highest scorer with 65 points (38g, 27a). He trailed only Lewis Ratcliff with 71 points (34g, 37a) and captain Tracey Kelusky's 69 points (32g, 37a).
Dowling made his NLL debut with Detroit in 1993. He then went on to play for Boston, Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, Montreal and Colorado, before moving to Calgary at the start of the 2004 season.
In a surprise move, the Roughnecks also signed veteran goalie Dwight Maetche to the practice roster.
Maetche played with the now-defunct Vancouver Ravens in 2004 for whom he won four games and lost seven.
"You can never have too many good netminders," said Bremner. "We're extremely happy with Curtis Palidwor and Andrew Leyshon, but we have to provide ourselves with insurance in the event one of them goes down between now and the playoffs."
The Maetche signing is also subject to league approval.
