Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals today announced that Ted Dent has been named the club's assistant coach for the 2006-07 season. Dent was head coach of the ECHL's Columbia Inferno last season.
"The organization is excited about adding Ted Dent to the coaching staff," said Admirals General Manager Al MacIsaac. "He's a good fit for our organization at this time."
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Dent compiled a 25-39-8 record with Columbia in 2005-06. Prior to joining the Inferno, he served as assistant coach of the ECHL's Trenton Titans during the 2004-05 season. There, he coached alongside Admirals' Head Coach Mike Haviland as the Titans won the Kelly Cup championship.
"Ted Dent is a quality coach and a quality person," said Haviland. "We had a great working relationship in Trenton, and he knows what I expect out of an assistant coach and the work that has to go into it. He's going to be a great addition for us."
Before starting his coaching career, Dent was the Video Coordinator for the NHL's Washington Capitals for five years. His job encompassed analyzing game footage to improve team systems and individual player techniques.
"Some players are better at learning things visually, and that's something that Teddy is great at," said Haviland of Dent's video expertise. "As a staff, we will hone in on individual skills so we can get our guys' playing levels up to where they need to be - in the National Hockey League."
A veteran of four professional hockey seasons between 1992-97, Dent recorded 198 points (69 goals, 129 assists) with 441 PIM in 194 games as a pro. The center spent one season with the CHL's Wichita Thunder and three seasons in the ECHL between the Johnstown Chiefs, Charlotte Checkers and Toledo Storm. Dent played at St. Lawrence University from 1988-92, recording 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) with 86 PIM in 83 games.
Dent also played two seasons of roller hockey with the Philadelphia Bulldogs of the Roller Hockey International league in 1994 and 1995. There, his head coach was MacIsaac and one of his teammates was current Admirals' Assistant General Manager Mark Bernard.
"I feel really fortunate to have the opportunity to work again with Mike Haviland and Al MacIsaac," said Dent. "They are two people that I respect tremendously in the hockey world. I think that there's a lot of chemistry between the Mike and I, and we compliment each other very well. I look forward to continuing the success that has been in Norfolk in the past."
Dent and his wife, Katherine, have three children: Dylan (6 years), Morgan (4 years) and Paige (11 months).
2006-07 season tickets are on sale now through the Admirals' office and through the Admirals' website. For more information, contact the Admirals at (757) 640-1212 or visit them online at www.norfolkadmirals.com.
