Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners got a team-wide effort for the second night in a row to beat the River City Rascals on Saturday evening at Rent One Park, this time by a score of 4-1 as Josh Kimborowicz earned his eighth win of the season against no losses, with the Miners improving their record to 34-16.

Kimborowicz (8-0) retired the first seven batters he faced in the game, but ran into trouble stemming from wildness in the third inning, as he walked two batters, gave up a single to load the bases and then a bases-loaded walk to Braxton Martinez to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. With one out, though, the Rascals would only get one run as a fielder's choice with the putout at home and then a flyout to deep right-center kept the deficit at one run.

The Miners would get that run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Craig Massey, and then would take the lead for good two innings later when with two outs against Rascals starter Jake Negrete (0-3), Alex De Leon lined an RBI double down the left field line to get the Miners their first lead at 2-1. In the sixth inning, against reliever Reese Gregory, Steve Marino singled and Riley Moore followed with a two-run home run to right, his second as a professional and first at home, for a 4-1 Miners lead.

The bullpen made the lead stand up from there, as four relievers combined to again hold the Rascals off the board late, with Chris DeBoo striking out one in a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Kimborowicz allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of work to remain unbeaten on the season, with the Miners record in his starts improving to a perfect 10-0. Southern Illinois also ran their record against River City this season to 7-1.

The Miners will go for the sweep in their final game before the all-star break on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m., with Jarett Miller pitching for the Miners against River City's Zeb Sneed.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
