River City Rascals News Release

Southern Illinois right-hander Josh Kimborowicz picked up his eighth win of the year as the Miners defeated River City 4-1 Saturday evening at Rent One Park. The Rascals (22-26) have now lost three series this year to the opponent and have been held to three runs or less in four of the eight games against the first place Miners (34-16).

Pitching on just three days rest, Josh Kimborowicz faced the minimum in the first two innings and then opened up the third with command issues. After a fly out to begin the frame, the first year Miner walked Robby Enslen and Steve Pascual putting the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Leadoff hitter Jason Merjano followed that up with the first hit off Kimborowicz and then Braxton Martinez walked on four pitches to give the Rascals a 1-0 lead. However, that would be the only run the Rascals would score in the inning as a ground out and a fly out to the wall left the bases loaded.

On the mound for the Rascals Saturday night was newcomer Jake Negrete. The right-hander was just signed Saturday morning and worked out of a jam in the opening frame by getting a double play ball. After a scoreless second and a 1-0 lead heading into the third, he had another first and third jam with one out to get himself out of.

Western Division All-Star Craig Massey was due up next and he rolled one up the middle and reached on an error that drove in a run. Negrete retired the next two hitters and kept the game knotted at one heading into the fourth inning.

After each team exchanged scoreless innings in the fourth, Negrete allowed a pair of singles and was one out away from keeping the game tied as Massey grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Despite falling behind in the count 1-2, Miners first baseman Alex De Leon delivered a line drive into the left field corner to give the Miners a one run lead and they would go to lead the rest of the night.

Negrete finished out the frame and left in line for the loss. In his Rascals debut, the righty allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings.

Reese Gregory replaced him and the Miners got their final runs during the sixth inning via a two run home run from Riley Moore that made the contest 4-1.

Rascal's relievers Michael Gunn and Will Schierholz took over the rest of the night and combined to hold the Miners hitless to keep River City within striking distance.

However, the Rascals stranded all five runners who reached base against the Miners pitching staff in the final four frames and finished the game with just the one run on seven hits.

Kimborowicz remained undefeated at 8-0 tossing five innings of one run ball and then Nick Palacios, Kyle Tinius and Evan Mott set up a save situation and right-hander Chris DeBoo was the man called upon to earn the save. He allowed a one out single to Enslen but retired the next two hitters to earn his third save of the year.

The Rascals close out the series tomorrow night and look to avoid being swept by the Miners for the second time this year. It is the final game before the All-Star break and River City will send Zeb Sneed out to the mound hoping to finish off the first-half on a high note.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 and can be heard on rascals.caster.fm.
