Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners are pleased to announce that captain Steve Marino, voted in as the starting third baseman for the West Division for the 2016 Y'All Star Game in Florence this coming Wednesday, July 13th, will also represent the Miners as one of ten participants in the 2016 Frontier League Home Run Derby on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:35 p.m. at UC Health Stadium.
Marino, who leads the Miners with nine home runs this season to rank inside the league's top-5, will be joined by fellow West Division all-stars Nik Balog (Evansville), Nolan Meadows (Normal), Andrew Godbold (Florence) and Craig Massoni (Gateway) as well as East Division all-stars Marc Flores (Joliet), Will Kengor (Traverse City), Coco Johnson (Windy City), David Popkins (Washington) and Paul Kronenfeld (Schaumburg).
This year, the format will consist of two seperate derbies- the regular Frontier League Home Run Derby and a Pro-Am Home Run Derby. The Pro-Am derby will pair each contestant with a 12-year old from Northern Kentucky, which will also count for the Frontier League contestants as the first round of the Frontier League derby. Each contestant and 12-year old (who will swing for a 220-foot fence set up on the field) will have two minutes to hit as many home runs as they can, with their scores being combined. The highest combined score between professional and amateur will be declared the winner of the Pro-Am Derby.
Then, the two highest individual professional scores from the first round will move on and face off in a three-minute head-to-head round to determine the Frontier League Home Run Derby champion. Tiebreakers will be determined with additional two-minute rounds. The champions of both derbies will be presented with trophy bats from the official bat of the derby, B45.
Fans can purchase tickets to the event for $10 by contacting the Florence Freedom at www.florencefreedom.com or by calling the Freedom offices at (859) 594-4487. The gates will open at 3:35 p.m. and the event will start at 6:35 p.m. The tickets will include admission to both the derby and a Bourbon Fest presented by Verst Group Logistics, which will take place on the concourse from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 13 different distilleries from across the state of Kentucky will be represented for fans to taste.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
