OHL Owen Sound Attack

Teachers Life Academic Spotlight: Logan LeSage

December 3, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

Looking for a good investment? The reigning Ivan Tennant Memorial Award Winner for the top academic high school player in the OHL continues his rise in school and on the ice.

Logan LeSage, from Nepean, Ontario, attended St. Mother Teresa High School in Ottawa before moving to Owen Sound. Drafted 29th overall in the 2019 U18 Priority Selection Draft, LeSage didn't take the typical route to the league but through an impressive showing at training camp, he made it impossible for management to send him home. Attack General Manager Dale DeGray says "Logan is one of the hardest working guys in our room. Our coaches rave about his work ethic, whether it's in the weight room, on the ice, or in the classroom." He adds: "It's paid dividends for him and we're really excited about what he's going to bring to the team next year, and we're really proud of how he did in school."

The 18-year-old is a little more humble about how he did in school. Between his time in Ottawa and at Owen Sound District Secondary School, LeSage achieved a 99% average. In his words: "My grades were pretty good." The forward is currently taking two classes online through Blyth Academy, English and Advanced Functions, but his passion lies elsewhere. He says: "I've grown to become really fascinated with business, especially the financial aspect. I would like to attend university to study business one day." LeSage has even taken his passion in business to a personal level. "My interest in the finance world has even led me to investing in the stock market."

LeSage has his future planned out well but he knows he wouldn't have reached this point without some help along the way. "All the teachers at the school in Owen Sound have been extremely supportive in allowing myself and the players to reach their academic goals." The life of a student-athlete can be daunting, especially for a first year player living away from home for the first time, but he says "they understand the busy schedule that players in the OHL face, and accommodate to that if we need a little extra time completing an assignment, which is very helpful."

A common thread in all of Owen Sound's academic success stories all reach back to one person. LeSage says he needs to make a "Big shout out to our educational advisor Sarah Rowe, she does so many things behind the scenes for the players in order to help us succeed academically. I honestly don't know what we would do without her." Rowe isn't the only one helping out at rink school. "I've also been receiving some extra help from Larry (math tutor) for my math course. If I'm ever having any trouble we set up a FaceTime call and he breaks everything down for me and helps me understand so I'm fully prepared for the test."

The '02 born LeSage might have a bright future ahead of him in finance, but first he wants to continue his OHL career. The speedy forward has at least two more years of eligibility ahead of him in Owen Sound, with the potential to return for an overage season. Throughout the Teachers Life Academic Spotlight series, we will continue to share our student-athletes academic successes and achievements.

"Teachers Life are proud sponsors of the OHL's Academic Spotlight Program," says Doug Baker, President and CEO of Teachers Life. "The dedication of the OHL's student-athletes to their education mirrors Teachers Life's commitment to students and educators across the province. By celebrating these athletes, they become role models to kids in their communities through their dedication to academic excellence, integrity and curiosity."
