Q&A with Nicholas Canade

Where are you currently going to school and what program/ classes are you taking?

I'm currently enrolled as a student at the University of Toronto Mississauga as well as online at Athabasca University. I'm in the business management program at UTM. I am focusing my studies on business and politics.

How do you balance the time commitment required to be successful on the ice and in the classroom?

The most important part is setting aside time for both. It takes a lot of planning and organization skills to put an equal effort into both academics and hockey. I do my best to find time in between hockey and use that to excel in my academics.

How do you make up for time out of the classroom (ie. road trips)?

I do my best to use some of the free time we get on the road to get ahead on my school work. When I'm away from the rink, academics is something I focus on and put extra time into; making sure I'm where I need to be in my studies.

What importance does the Mississauga Steelheads organization place on academic success?

The Steelheads organization has played a massive part in helping me balance between the two. They push their players to not only perform to their best capabilities on the ice but also in their academics. They believe both are equally important and work with you in every way they can to give you the resources you need to succeed in both sport and academics.

What advice/tips do you have for young fans out there who dream of one day playing in the OHL.

The biggest piece of advice I would give is time management. As a hockey player, you face many different challenges and have many things to juggle at once. I believe finding the time to help organize your day-to day-tasks is very important and will not only help you perform better on the ice but as well as away from the rink.
