BUFFALO, NY (February 22, 2006) - Buffalo Bandits forward John Tavares has been named the NLL Overall Player of the Week for Week 8. Tavares scored the 1,091st point of his NLL career in the third quarter of the Bandits 14-9 win against Minnesota on Saturday, tying the NLL career scoring record held by Colorado Mammoth head coach Gary Gait.
The historic point was an assist on a goal by Cory Bomberry at 8:02. Tavares finished the game with six points (1+5), increasing his season total to 40 (14+26).
The first player in NLL history to score 500 goals and 500 assists, Tavares is a three-time NLL MVP Award winner (1994, 2000, and 2001). The Toronto, Ontario native has led the Bandits in scoring during 13 of those 15 previous seasons. He will be a starter for the East Division in the 2006 NLL All-Star Game on February 25 in Toronto, which will be his fifth career All-Star Game. The NLL MVP Award winner in 1994, 2000, and 2001, Tavares holds the Bandits franchise records in games played (169), goals (531), assists (560), and points (1,091).
