Tarpons Trip up Tortugas in Opener, 3-0

April 12, 2019 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - RHP Austin Orewiler cruised through the game's first five innings, but an untimely error and two-strike base-hit were enough to spoil a strong performance. Tampa scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, as the Tarpons topped the Daytona Tortugas, 3-0, in front of 3,476 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night.

A scoreless contest with nobody on and two outs in the top of the sixth, CF Pablo Olivares (1-3, R) sparked the Tampa (3-6) with a single to center. SS Diego Castillo (0-4, R) followed with a grounder that should have ended the inning, but an error kept the frame alive. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, 2B Oswaldo Cabrera (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, SO) slapped a 3-2 pitch through a hole on the right side of the infield. Both men came across to score, giving the Tarpons a 2-0 advantage.

Thanks to LF Isiah Gilliam (2-3, R, BB, SO), Tampa extended their lead in the seventh. The switch-hitter ignited the inning with a walk and proceeded to swipe second base. After a ground out moved him to third, C Jason Lopez (0-4, RBI, SO) hit a tapper to short with a drawn-in infield. The throw home was offline, as Gilliam scored to put the Yankees' affiliate ahead, 3-0.

Daytona (3-6) put multiple men on base in the first inning and got a runner to third in the seventh, but could not muster a run. In the sixth, 3B Jonathan India (0-2, SO) was plunked on the wrist with a pitch and was in visible pain. The 22-year-old stayed in the game and swiped second base, but exited the contest after before the start of the seventh inning.

RHP Austin Orewiler (5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB, 2 SO) was superb in his first start of the season for the Tortugas. The former Rice Owl surrendered just two unearned runs over 5.2 innings in a tough-luck defeat. Tampa's RHP Glenn Otto (5.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 2 SO) struggled with his command early but settled down to hurl five scoreless frames for his first win of 2019. RHP Kyle Zurak (2.0 IP, 2 SO) worked a perfect eighth and ninth inning to garner his first save of the season.

The Tortugas will look re-enter the win column on Saturday, as former Florida Gator RHP Michael Byrne (0-1, 6.75 ERA) is expected to make his second start of the campaign. Tampa is expected to counter with RHP Miguel Yajure (0-1, 6.00 ERA).

The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:50 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:05 p.m. ET start. Saturday evening's contest can be heard on daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.

Fans are encouraged to arrive at the ballpark early, as the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Jackie Robinson Ballpark statue giveaway - courtesy of Radiology Associates Imaging - in honor of what would have been his 100th birthday. After the final out, fans will be treated to another spectacular Postgame Fireworks display.

Season ticket and multi-game plans are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
