Taking Care of Business: How the Rapids Can Earn a Playoff Spot on Wednesday Night

November 4, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release

For the first time this season, the Rapids control their own destiny for the playoffs. In the midst of a year with so many ups and downs, that certainty feels pretty good.

Colorado has ample opportunity to clinch a playoff spot tonight - but that doesn't mean it will be an easy road. Here are the games and scenarios that impact the Rapids playoff push on Wednesday night.

1. Rapids win or draw at Portland

Colorado can earn a spot in the playoffs with a win or a tie against the Timbers, regardless of what happens in any other game. While Portland has already clinched their right to play for the 2020 MLS Cup, the club is currently in a battle for the Supporters' Shield, so expect a battle at Providence Park tonight.

2. Sounders get the win or a tie against the Galaxy

Another way the Rapids could make the playoffs tonight, regardless of their own result, would be if Seattle can get a tie or a win in Los Angeles against the Galaxy. Even if Colorado losses to Portland, a loss for the Galaxy would eliminate them from contention and solidify the Rapids' ticket.

3. Bonus: San Jose loses to LAFC

Colorado currently is in seventh in the Western Conference. In order to keep it that way, it would be good for the Earthquakes, currently in eighth, to get as few points as possible. Their result does not impact whether or not the Rapids clinch tonight, but it will help with the seeding.

4. Double Bonus: FC Dallas falls to Nashville SC

Right now, the Rapids have 1.38 points per game, and a win against Portland would move them up to 1.47 points per game. Colorado is in seventh in the West while FC Dallas is in sixth with 1.55 points per game. A loss for FC Dallas would drop them down to 1.48 points per game and put the that sixth spot within reach going into Decision Day.
