FC Cincinnati News Release
CINCINNATI - The FC Cincinnati Academy has announced the dates for the 2021 Discovery Program, slated to begin in the month of February. The Discovery Program is the start of FC Cincinnati Academy's elite player development pathway in an effort to both identify local youth talent and provide MLS-level education and training to local coaches and players.
"In a short period of time, the Discovery Program has become a fantastic resource for identification of future FC Cincinnati Academy players," said Larry Sunderland, FC Cincinnati's director of player development. "Through scouting and recommendations of area coaches, hundreds of players have come through the program. We are excited by the talent that is being recognized in our market and look forward to discovering the next generation of FC Cincinnati Academy players."
The free-to-play developmental programming will be offered to high performing players in the 2009-10 age groups. Players will be invited to participate in the weekly program while staying registered with their respective club team and continue to represent their club in respective practices and games.
The program debuted in October 2019 and included 38 players from 10 different clubs around the Greater Cincinnati region who trained at the Mercy Health Training Center once a week. The Discovery Program is an instrumental piece for the FC Cincinnati Academy player identification process in which potential future Academy players are identified and monitored. Over half of the Pre-Academy (U-13 & U-14) rosters are comprised of players that participated in the program.
The Discovery Program helps the FC Cincinnati Academy foster relationships with local clubs, enhance player development in the region and help players understand the quality, skill and attributes needed to earn a place at an MLS academy. In addition, the program is used as a coaching education tool for local youth coaches to become involved and engrained within the system.
