Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 5:05 p.m. PT | Constellation Field: Sugar Land, TX
RHP Darren McCaughan vs. RHP Shawn Dubin
#DarrenDay: In his last start on Wednesday (6/15) vs. Sacramento, Rainiers RHP Darren McCaughan worked the longest outing for a Tacoma starter this season, 7.1 IP. His first hit allowed was on his 116th pitch, with one out in the eighth inning (2 BB). In the process, he struck out a career-high 11 batters, one shy of Tacoma's season-high (Daniel Ponce de Leon, 12 K, 5/21 at Sacramento). McCaughan was named PCL Pitcher of The Week for the effort, the fourth time in five weeks a Rainier has been named either Pitcher or Player of The Week (RHP Konner Wade, LHP Justus Sheffield, OF Marcus Wilson).
McCaughan has posted a winning decision in four consecutive starts, allowing 2 ER or fewer in each. He's the first Rainiers pitcher to win four straight starts this season. McCaughan currently leads the PCL with 66.2 innings pitched, and is striking out just shy of a batter per inning with 66 K, which is seventh in the league.
OMAHA!: This week is the 10th anniversary of the University of Arizona's Baseball National Championship, and Rainiers starting pitcher Konner Wade and Tacoma first base/bench coach Seth Mejias-Brean (INF) were teammates on that 2012 squad. Those Wildcats went 48-17 and swept the University of South Carolina in the College World Series Final by scores of 5-1 and 4-1 (best-of-three).
A REAL (MCCOY) GOOD JUNE: Rainiers middle infielder Mason McCoy is batting .317 (19-for-60) so far this month, the only player on the club to appear in each of Tacoma's 17 games in June. He's collected seven extra-base hits (3 HR, 1 3B) while OPSing .938 (.550 SLG) since June 1. McCoy has reached base safely in 14 of 17 games this month (.388 OBP, 7 BB, 11 R, 8 RBI). He was traded to the Seattle Mariners by the Baltimore Orioles on 4/7/22 for cash considerations, and was a sixth round draft pick of Baltimore in 2017 out of the University of Iowa. McCoy made his Triple-A debut last season, in 112 games for Norfolk.
HE'S AN O'K PLAYER: With a walk on Sunday, Tacoma catcher Brian O'Keefe has reached base with either a walk or base hit in 28 of the 30 games he's played this season, after returning from a broken hamate bone on 4/27 at Las Vegas. O'Keefe is batting .321 with a .991 OPS (.413/.578), with five home runs, 16 extra-base hits and 16 walks.
MARVELOUS MARCUS: Tacoma outfielder Marcus Wilson has homered in four of his last eight games, and has had an extra-base hit in eight of 10 games, dating to June 9. His 12 home runs lead the Rainiers by three.
EXCEEDINGLY BRASH: On Thursday, Rainiers right-hander Matt Brash converted his second career Triple-A save chance in three days, finishing a 6-5 Tacoma victory over Sacramento. He retired the ninth in order with a pair of strikeouts. Brash currently has a streak of 11 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run dating to May 25, each of which were 1.0 IP: 7 H (.175 BAA), 2 BB (0.82 WHIP), 19 K.
HOT START: Tacoma is 9-3 in series openers in 2022 (4-2 home, 5-1 road), accounting for 34.6% of their win total. On their recent homestand (June 10-19), the Rainiers scored in the first inning in six of nine games.
SO DEFENSIVE: Tacoma's 39 errors as a club are fewest in the PCL, and second-fewest in Triple-A behind only Nashville (31). Tacoma lasted seven complete games without committing an error; from the 2nd inning at home on June 10 vs. Round Rock until the 5th inning on June 19 vs. Sacramento, a streak of 72 consecutive complete innings without a defensive miscue, spanning nine games. In the Majors, the Mariners' 25 errors are fewest in the American League, and second-fewest in MLB behind only San Diego (23).
A TRIPLE-A RATING: Of the 30 clubs at the highest level of Minor League Baseball, the Rainiers and Albuquerque have hit the fourth-most home runs this season with 93; Memphis (IL) has 105, El Paso has 102 to lead the PCL and Sacramento has 94. Tacoma has stolen the second-most bases at the level with 91, trailing only Buffalo (95) of the International League.
SHOO SHOO SHOO TO SUGAR TOWN: In this latest iteration of the PCL (since 2021), Sugar Land, Texas is Tacoma's longest trip (2,341 miles). The former Atlantic League franchise is in their second season as Houston's top affiliate.
UNI WATCH: The 2022 Tacoma Rainiers have the following win-loss record by uniform top: Home white (7-9), red (12-16), navy blue (1-3), road grey (4-5), "La Familia de Tacoma" (2-2, Copa de la Diversion), specialty auction (0-4).
