Tacoma Defiance News Release
LIVERMORE, CALIF. - Tacoma Defiance (8-7-6, 30 points) fell 3-1 at Oakland Roots SC (7-9-6, 27 points) Wednesday evening. With the result, Tacoma is 1-2-0 against Oakland this season. The two sides will meet for the fourth and final time of the season on October 20 at Cheney Stadium.
The home side struck first when an attempted clearance deflected off Johnny Rodriguez and found the feet of Lindo Mfeka, who was able to fire a low shot past Tacoma goalkeeper Christian Herrera. Ray Serrano answered in the 32nd minute on a beautiful individual goal that saw him receive a ball from Danny Robles, dribble around a defender and score from a tough angle into the roof of goal. Roots SC took the lead right before halftime when Wal Fall took a half-volley from just outside the 18-yard-box that bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Mfeka secured his brace in the 54th minute, sprinting into the area and finding the ball at his feet before firing a shot into the back of the net.
With the loss, Tacoma remains in fourth place in the Pacific Division standings with 30 points. It sits four points behind both San Diego Loyal SC and Orange County SC with two games in hand.
Tacoma faces a quick turnaround as it heads to San Diego Loyal SC to face the Southern Californian side for the fourth time this season on Sunday, September 19 (3:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+). Tacoma has won every meeting against San Diego this season.
