Tacoma Defiance News Release
TUKWILA, WASH. - Tacoma Defiance (6-3-5, 26 points) defeated Austin FC II (9-4-3, 31 points) 1-0 Sunday evening at Starfire Stadium. Braudilio Rodrigues bagged a first-half penalty kick as Tacoma kept the shutout to gain all three points.
Rodrigues' penalty strike came after Paul Rothrock drew a foul in the area following a throw-in. The midfielder stepped up to the spot and buried the attempt in the 32nd minute for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Austin's Jackson Walti was issued a red card in the 82nd minute for denying a goal-scoring opportunity inside the area, but Tacoma's Fito Ovalle failed to convert the ensuing penalty attempt.
With the result, Tacoma moves into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division with Whitecaps FC 2, both with 26 points.
Following tonight's contest, Wade Webber's side stays at home to take on Houston Dynamo 2 on Sunday, July 2 at Starfire Stadium (7:00 p.m. PT / Apple TV).
