
T.J. Mathews and Brian Warren return to Bluefish

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. September 10, 2004 â The Bridgeport Bluefish announced today that RHP T.J. Mathews and RHP Brian Warren will be returning to the team and in uniform for tonight's game at Newark.
Mathews, who spent a good part of the first half of the 2004 season recovering from having bone spurs removed from his elbow, fell into the role of closer for the Bluefish before reporting to Class AAA Las Vegas. He earned saves in five of his last six appearances for Bridgeport, and then tallied one win and five saves in 13 appearances for Las Vegas. In 18 innings pitched, he compiled a 4.50 ERA, with 17 hits, four walks and 12 strikeouts.
T.J. spent parts of eight seasons (1995-2002) in the Major Leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros, before spending the 2003 and beginning of the 2004 season with Bridgeport. In 2002, he began the season with the Astros where he did not record a decision, but had a 3.44 ERA in 12 relief appearances. In his Major League career Mathews has posted a 32-26 record to go along with 16 saves and a 3.82 ERA in 362 appearances out of the bullpen. Posted a team high 11 wins for the Bluefish in 30 appearances for the Bluefish in 2003. Struck out a team high 116 batters while compiling a 4.02 ERA on the season.
Warren, who made appearances in 16 games for the Bluefish in the beginning of the season, reported to the Sinon Bulls in Taiwan in the end of June. With the âFish, he tallied two saves and a 1.76 ERA. In 15.1 innings pitched, Warren had 21 strikeouts and one walk.
Warren spent parts of four seasons (1990-1993) with Niagara Falls of the New York Pennsylvania League, Lakeland Blueclaws of the Florida State League, and London of the Eastern League. He spent the next three seasons with AAA Indianapolis (1994-96) where in 1994 led the league in walks per nine innings pitched by a reliever (1.34) and was ranked fifth in games pitched (55) and in 1995 led the league again in walks per nine innings pitched by a relief (1.13). He made his international debut with Chiba Lotte of the Pacific League in Japan in 1998 appearing in 24 games and earning a career low 0.93 ERA in 29.0 innings of work. Warren returned to Chiba for the 1999 and 2000 seasons compiling a 4-4 record with 46 saves in 95.2 innings pitched.
