Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, September 10—The Newark Bears rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish, 4-3, Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears have now won five games in a row and six of their last seven.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning the Bears received a lead-off double from pinch-hitter Jack Santora off of Bridgeport's Byron Batson. The next batter, Rickey Henderson, worked the count to three-and-one before singling up the middle to score Santora with the tying run.

After Henderson was sacrificed to second base, the Bluefish brought right-hander Brian Warren into the game and he promptly struck out Newark's Chris Jones for the second out of the inning. However Newark's Keith Maxwell followed with a booming double off of the wall in center field for his team-high 79th run-batted-in to give the Bears a 4-3 lead.

Travis Wade allowed an infield hit in the 9th inning, but closed the game out for his 4th save of the season. Right-hander Jose Lopez (2-1) picked up the win for Newark, hurling three scoreless innings and allowing only one base hit.

Bears starter Cliff Foster quite possibly saved the game in the 1st inning. Foster walked the first three batters of the contest before striking out the next two batters and getting the third to fly out to right field without allowing a run to score. Foster tossed five innings for the Bears and allowed three runs and four hits.

Chris Van Rossum was 2-3 for Newark, including his 4th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the 5th inning.

The Bears and Bluefish will play the middle game of their three-game set Saturday night at The Den beginning at 6:05 PM. Right-hander Mike Smith (2-1) will get the starting nod for Newark.
