Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, September 10âThe Newark Bears today announced that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Eric Montoya and also placed outfielder Mike Piercy on the Disabled List retroactive to September 7th. The two transactions were made before rosters of all Atlantic League teams became finalized by noon today as per league regulations.
The 26 year-old Montoya is coming off of an excellent season pitching for Edinburg in the Central League. Montoya posted a 10-2 record and a 2.59 ERA in 19 starts this season, holding batters to a .224 batting average against. He allowed only 103 hits in 121.2 innings of work in which he struck out 85 batters.
Last season the fifth-year pro won a career-high 14 games, posting a 14-4 mark with a 4.27 ERA in 21 starts for Edinburg. Montoya owns a sparkling lifetime won-loss record of 31-10.
Piercy, who is suffering from a leg injury, is headed to the Disabled List for the second time this season. Should the Bears make the post-season he is still eligible to be placed on the active roster. Currently the Bears have 25 players on the active roster, two on the Disabled List and one on the Suspended List.
The Bears, who trail the Camden Riversharks by one-half game in the south division with nine games remaining in the regular season, are hosting the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium this weekend in their final homestand of the regular season.
