
T-Birds Send Vipers Packing With 15 Point Win

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Shane Edwards had 21 points and 8 rebounds to help the Albuquerque Thunderbirds knock off Rio Grande Valley for the second time in three days with a 108-93 victory over the Vipers on Friday night. The win moves Albuquerque into fourth place in the Western Conference standings.
Antoine Agudio finished with 24 points, and Carlos Powell added 18 points for the Thunderbirds, who led from start to finish.
Albuquerque opened the game on fire, and led 15-0 just 3 minutes into the game. Carlos Powell connected on three threes during that time period, bringing the Tingley Coliseum crowd to its feet. The T-Birds led 31-20 at the end of the first, holding Rio Grande Valley to just 27.3% shooting in the quarter.
The Thunderbirds continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, and pushed the lead to 50-30 with 4:42 remaining in the half. The Thunderbirds lead was 13 at the break (56-43), thanks to a combined 39 points from Powell, Shane Edwards and Tony Danridge.
The Vipers cut the lead to seven midway through the third quarter, but Albuquerque rallied to push the lead back to double figures. Back to back threes from Antoine Agudio and Chad Toppert put the T-Birds up 17 with under a minute to play in the period, and Albuquerque led 80-65 at the end of the third.
Albuquerque led 95-73 after a left hand turnaround from Kurt Looby, and the T-Birds lead was never threatened as the team notched the 15 point win.
Danridge added 15 points for Albuquerque, and Looby rounded out the T-Birds in double figures with 10 points.
Mike Harris led the way for Rio Grande Valley with 20 points. Ernest Scott added 19 for the Vipers.
Albuquerque shot 50.6% from the field for the game. Rio Grande Valley connected on 40.7%.
The T-Birds evened the season series against the Vipers with the win. Albuquerque has given the Vipers four of their eight losses on the season.
The T-Birds will be in action tomorrow when they again host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The game will begin at 7 pm, and fans are encouraged to come out and help represent the state of New Mexico as the game will be broadcast on NBA TV as the NBA Development League Game of the Week.
