Erie Otters News Release

Shawn Szydlowski notched his first hat trick in two seasons as the Erie Otters (9-13-1-0) grabbed their first win in Peterborough since January 29, 2004 in a 4-1 victory over the Petes Thursday night.

Lino Martschini put the Petes on the board 5:23 into the first as a scored on a breakaway during the power play, ending the Otters' streak of 26 penalties killed in a row. The last power play goal scored against Erie was by the Plymouth Whalers on October 27.

Szydlowski took advantage of a Petes defensive zone turnover for his eighth goal of the season at 11:30. The overage right winger took the puck in the left circle and fired it through the left pad of Bryce O'Hagan to tie the contest.

The two teams couldn't score in the second period, but were not without their chances. Connor Crisp rung the crossbar early in the period that could have given him his first career OHL goal. The Petes had a long two-man advantage late in the period but the penalty kill, led by Ramis Sadikov in net, was strong for Erie in making sure the score stayed tied going into the third.

In the third period, it was the Szydlowski Show at the Memorial Centre. The Otters took the lead for good 1:38 into the frame as Szydlowski ripped a shot over the right shoulder of O'Hagan from the slot.

The Petes couldn't solve the Otters in the final period, as the defense held together and Sadikov took charge in net. Szydlowski put the game away with his hat trick goal from his own blue line into empty net at 18:53 for the third hat trick of his career. Greg McKegg added another empty netter for good measure with four seconds remaining to put an exclamation point on the victory.

Sadikov made 25 saves for Erie as the Otters outshot the Petes, 31-26. David Shields and Adam Pelech each finished the game with a +4 rating, as the Otters gave up nothing at even strength.

The Otters continue on the road to Oshawa Friday night as they take on the Generals at 7:35 p.m.. Fans can listen to the game live online at ottershockey.com (courtesy of the James H.
