Syvret Overtime Goal Lifts Adirondack To 3-2 Win In Springfield

Adirondack Phantoms News Release

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Danny Syvret scored the game-winning goal with 1.6 seconds left in overtime as the Adirondack Phantoms beat the Springfield Falcons 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center.

With both teams struggling to find wins and goal, the early portion of the first period was understandably wide open. Momentum shifted slowly back-and-forth between the two teams and neither really asserted dominance. However, with just under a minute left Stefan Legein scored a highlight-reel quality unassisted goal to give the Phantoms the lead. Legein forced a turnover, skated around a Falcon's defenseman and as he was being hooked down, the nearly horizontal right wing snapped a wrist shot over the glove of goaltender Andrew Perugini at 19:01; the goal was Legein's fourth goal in his last five games and his ninth overall this season.

Most of the second period was riddled with penalties as the two clubs combined for six minors, which interrupted the flow of the game. Late in the period, on their fourth power play of the night, Adirondack extended their lead to 2-0 when Krys Kolanos scored at 18:10. Danny Syvret sent Kolanos down the right wing and the Phantoms forward snapped a wrist shot that hit off the post, but kicked back to his stick as he moved behind the net. Kolanos picked up the rebound in stride and wrapped the puck around the back of the cage in for his fifth goal of the season. But the Falcons would respond in the final minute of the frame as Chad Wiseman broke into the zone and from just about the crease lifted the puck into the roof of the net at 19:43.

Leading 2-1 going into the third period Adirondack defended well and appeared to be heading for a narrow road victory, when rookie Marc-Andre Bourdon could not get the puck out of his glove in the defensive zone and was whistled for delay of game (closing hand on the puck) at 16:33. Springfield was unsuccessful on their first five power plays in the contest, but 22 seconds into their sixth advantage Wiseman made a beautiful pass from behind the net to defenseman Chris Armstrong, who pinched in from the blue line to one-time the puck over the glove of Nic Riopel and into the top corner of the net at 16:49.

Play was balanced in overtime, but in the dying moments of the four-on-four extra session Bourdon made up for his earlier penalty. He made a great save at the blue line to keep the puck alive and threw it down low to find Jason Ward below the defense. Ward skated across the top of the crease and then made a clever backhand pass back to the right post to a wide open Syvret who deposited his shot into the back of the net with just 1.6 seconds left on the clock.

Rookie goaltender Nic Riopel earned his third win of the season, stopping 31-of-33 shots to help Adirondack improve to 10-11-2-0 on the year. Andrew Perugini took the loss in goal for Springfield, finishing with 31 saves on 34 shots faced as the Falcons dropped to 10-11-4-2. The Phantoms out-shot Springfield 34-33 and went 1-for-4 on the power play; the Falcons were 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.
