Manitoba Moose News Release
Manitoba closed-out their second 'three-in-three' series this season with a 4-3 victory over the Rockford IceHogs on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,577 fans at the MetroCentre. Sergei Shirokov opened the scoring while Brian Salcido, Guillaume Desbiens and Aaron Rome all notched powerplay markers. Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 21 of24 shots for his 12th win this season.
A mere 1:02 into the game, the Moose were penalized with a bench minor for too many men giving the IceHogs the first powerplay of the night. The home team fired one shot on Cory Schneider during the man-advantage but failed to capitalize.
Tempers flared between Matt Pettinger and Jack Skille at 5:02. After a short battle, that showcased equal punches from both sides, each attacker was handed a five-minute fighting major.
At 16:50 the Moose opened the scoring. With a centering pass from behind the net, courtesy of Marco Rosa, Sergei Shirokov wired the puck into the mesh for the game's first lead.
At 6:22 of the second period, Guillaume Desbiens was handed a goaltender interference minor, but Dan Cloutier's retaliation earned him a 10-minute match penalty for throwing equipment. While Cloutier was serving his time, goaltender Joe Fallon manned the pipes during the Moose advantage.
Moments later, Richard Petiot was penalized for hooking, putting the Moose on a five-on-three advantage. Situated in the IceHogs zone, Brian Salcido blasted the puck from the point to extend his point streak to three games and put the Moose on top by two.
With another IceHog serving time, Manitoba capitalized on their 17th shot of the night. At 17:31, Guillaume Desbiens snuck the puck under the cross bar to give his club a 3-0 lead.
The IceHogs came out soaring in the third period and broke their goose-egg 53 seconds into the frame. Jeff Skille topped the puck over Schneider, while on the powerplay, to get on the board, 3-1.
With Neil Petruic serving an interference penalty a 5:02 of the third, Rockford put themselves within one. With a sleek pass from Darryl Boyle, Jeff Skille notched his second of the night off the doorstep for a 3-2 tally.
After the goal, Bryan Bickell was put away for slashing, allowing the Moose to score their third powerplay goal of the night. Aaron Rome notched his fourth goal in five game, with a wrist shot, to double-up the IceHogs, 4-2.
At 17:32, Marty Murray was sent to the sin bin for tripping allowing Kyle Greentree to notch a powerplay marker. Despite the last minute effort, Rockford could not catch up and fell 4-3 to the Moose.
LOOKING AHEAD The Moose will travel to Norfolk next weekend for a double-header against the Admirals
