Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Moosic, Pa. - Nate Schierholtz thundered a three-run home run that set the tone in Monday night's 11-2 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs (Washington Nationals). The loss ended the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' (Triple-A/New York Yankees) five-game winning streak and ended the season series between the two clubs with the RailRiders (64-67) posting wins in 10 of the 16 totals meetings.

Syracuse (75-55) plated the game's first eight runs, grabbing the initial lead on Shierholtz' three-run tater to center in the first off starter Bryan Mitchell. Two more crossed in the third when Eury Perez's threated a double right, and Tyler Moore's sacrifice fly made it 5-0 after the first third of the game. Syracuse claimed three more in the fifth, chasing Mitchell from the game on Brandon Laird's two-out RBI double to right-center, 8-0.

Corban Joseph answered the three-run frame with a solo home run for the RailRiders' first run. Jose Pirela brought the game to within six with a sacrifice fly to left-center, 8-2. The RailRiders would not score again. Syracuse used a crooked number in the eighth and a Gregg Dobbs' home run in the ninth, brought the game to its final ledger of 11-2.

Mitchell (4-2) took the loss, firing 4.2 innings and allowing eight runs. He walked two batters and struck out four on 81 pitches. The loss marked Mitchell's first since an outing against the Charlotte Knights on July 17. Right-hander A.J. Cole (6-0) worked six efficient frames and allowed two runs on four hits in the win. Cole has yet to lose at the Triple-A level.

The RailRiders embark on a six-game road trip when the club opens up a two-game series against the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) Thursday, August 21 at 7:05 p.m. The RailRiders will toss left-handed pitcher Nik Turley (3-2, 5.12) while the Bisons toss the left-handed Daniel Norris (2-0, 0.77). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
