Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, came away with a 6-2 win over the Durham Bulls Sunday evening at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the win, Syracuse stays a half game ahead of Buffalo and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for first place in the IL North Division.
The Chiefs (33-23) got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the third inning. Leonard Davis led off the inning by launching a double to deep right field. Bill Rhinehart and Boomer Whiting then walked to load the bases. With two outs in the inning, Kevin Mench laced a single to left field, allowing Davis and Rhinehart to come around with the first runs of the game. The single was one of two hits in the game for Mench.
Durham (33-24) responded with two runs in the fourth. Third baseman Dan Johnson led off the inning with a towering home run to right field. It was Johnson's team-leading 16th dinger of the season. Ryan Shealy and Chris Richard followed Johnson's home run with back-to-back singles. Shealy, who had advanced to third on Chase Lambin's throwing error, came home with the tying run on Desmond Jenning's grounder to second base.
The Chiefs grabbed the lead again in the bottom half of the inning on Bill Rhinehart's solo homer to deep right field. The long ball was Rhinehart's first home run at the Triple-A level and his fifth in the minors this year.
Syracuse added two more to their total on Justin Maxwell's two-run shot in the sixth inning to make it 5-2. It was Maxwell's second home run in as many days. By collecting two more hits today, Maxwell has seen his batting average increase from .236 to .266 over the last two games.
