Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

Denver, Colo. (Tuesday, June 16, 2015) - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fall short of moving on to the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Switchbacks FC lost to the Colorado Rapids 4-1 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City Tuesday night.

It was a match that showed great intensity of play by Switchbacks FC from the first minute to the 93rd .

"The guys showed very well tonight and we will take a lot of positives out of this game," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We keep playing with this heart and determination, we will win a lot of games."

This was the first meeting between these two Colorado clubs and the rivalry got heated right from the start of the match. The Rapids' first goal came in the 26th minute when Dominique Badji (#14) got past the Switchbacks defense. Then Joseph Greenspan (#20) found the back of the net in the 32nd minute with a header off of a free kick.

In the 62nd minute, a foul by Switchbacks' Josh Phillips (#2) turned into a red card, and Phillips was ejected from the match, putting the Switchbacks down a man.

Just a few minutes later, the Rapids capitalized on the Switchbacks' loss of a man and Dillon Serna (#17) scored.

It was Jordan Burt (#25) who punched the ball into the back of the net, putting the Switchbacks on the board in the 91st minute.

"I was fortunate enough to get the ball inside the box with plenty of time and was able to slot it away, but regardless of the goal, I was proud of how the team played," said Switchbacks' Jordan Burt.

The Rapids' Serna got the club's final goal in the 93rd minute.

The Colorado Rapids now advance to Round 16 in the U.S. Open Cup. The draw for which club they will play will be on Thursday at 11 a.m.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is seen as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship. It is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer, and dates back to 1914.

Switchbacks FC return to USL play on Friday, June 19th, when the club travels to play St. Louis FC.

"Although we lost, it's still a blessing by God that we get to fight and battle in the sport we love," said Switchbacks' Davy Armstrong. "We've just got to keep our heads up and take what we've learned in this game to St. Louis and win."
