Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Irvine, CA - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC finished 3rd in the Western Conference regular season after a 4-0 loss to Orange County Blues FC.
Going into the match, the Switchbacks were in position to claim the USL Western Conference regular season title. All they needed to do was win and the Western Conference would have to go through Colorado Springs. Unfortunately that proved to be a much more difficult task than expected.
Orange County scored early after a free kick just outside the box was placed perfectly by Crettenand. Orange County would continue to control the early portions of the match despite multiple opportunities from the Switchbacks. The Switchbacks did have their chances, with 3 first-half corners and a few runs in the box, but Orange County would hold firm and take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Switchbacks came out in the second half with a sense of urgency controlling the early portions of the second half. Mike Seth nearly found an equalizer after a nice ball in from Jordan Burt but the header was just inches wide of the post. The teams would battle back and forth but it remained a 1-0 game until the closing minutes. Orange County opened the flood gates in the final minutes as they scored in the 87th minute, as well as two stoppage time goals to take a 4-0 win over the Switchbacks. The 4 goals were the most the Switchbacks had allowed all season. With the win Orange County secured their playoff spot as the #8 seed.
"The guys just weren't ready to play today," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "Now, we need to get ready for our playoff game against Vancouver."
The Switchbacks will return home on Friday, September 30th at 7:00 PM for the Western Conference Quarterfinals. The Switchbacks are the #3 seed and will play #6 seeded Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.
