Switchbacks FC Fall to New Mexico on the Road for Final Regular Season Match

October 15, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

Colorado Springs, COLO - Switchbacks FC finished their regular season with a record of 17-14-4 after a loss to New Mexico on the road finished out their season.

The Switchbacks have already locked in third place for the Western Conference, ensuring a home playoff match at Weidner Field. Tonight's contest against New Mexico helped determine who they would have as an opponent for that first round match.

The match started evenly matched, and the action was pretty slow until New Mexico was able to open the scoreboard in the 21st minute as a fumbled interception from the Switchbacks left the net wide for New Mexico's Cristian Nava to edge the ball in past COS goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell.

Despite the Switchbacks holding 58.8% of possession in the first half and outshooting New Mexico 6-4, the home team would earn a second goal in the final minutes of the first half as #25 Daniel Bruce earns a cross the box pass to put it in in the top left corner of the net.

The Switchbacks made a handful of subs in the first few minutes of the game to try and inject some energy onto the pitch as much as to rest some players ahead of playoffs. It seemed to do the trick as COS held over 80% of the posession in the first fifteen minutes of play, and had a huge goal scoring opportunity when #6 Cam Lindley was able to cross the ball high to the center of the goal. New Mexico goalkeeper Alex Tambakis caught and then fumbled the ball, but the play was called down before #23 Amoh could put it in.

#1 Caldwell earned a huge save in the 73rd minute to keep the third goal off the board and then two minutes later New Mexico drew a foul that opened the scoring chances for the Switchbacks. A free kick right outside the 18 yard box got blocked by the New Mexico wall and kicked out of play before a goal could be scored however. The match would end twenty minutes later with no change to the scoreboard.

The Switchbacks will be home next week, October 22nd, for a historic downtown Weidner Field home playoff match.
