Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell on the road to New Mexico United 3-2.
New Mexico got on the board early as a cross from the right side of the penalty area was volleyed by Christopher Wehan from close range.
The Switchbacks responded in the 23rd minute when Michee Ngalina sent in a cross from the left side of the box that Rashid Tetteh headed into his own net.
Late in the first half, New Mexico regained the lead as Josh Suggs got behind the Switchbacks' defense and curled his shot inside the left post going into the break.
New Mexico United was awarded a penalty early in the second half after Beverly Makangila and Devon Sandoval jostled for position and New Mexico's 6'1" forward fell in the penalty area. Sandoval finished the ensuing penalty kick high inside the right post, just outside of Abraham Rodriguez's reach.
A similar play on the other end resulted in a free kick for the Switchbacks on the outside edge of the penalty area. Ngalina hit a powerful shot to the right side of the goal but Alex Tambakis was able to push the shot wide.
With only two minutes left to play, Jose Torres played a 45 yard pass into the stride of Dantouma "Yaya" Toure who smashed a shot from the top of the box into the roof of the net to bring the Switchbacks within a goal.
The Switchbacks are back at Weidner Field on September 8 to face the Real Monarchs SLC with gates opening at 6pm for a 7pm kick off. This is Margaritaville Night with $3 margarita's being served all night long!
