Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks got back on track this week following their loss to Seattle Sounders FC 2 by defeating new USL side San Antonio FC 1-0.
The Switchbacks were locked into another defensive battle in the first half and both teams had a few chances but both keepers held their ground as they took a scoreless draw into halftime. The Switchbacks had an early scare in the first half as starting keeper Devala Gorrick had to be substituted in the 21st minute after being hit in the head. New goalkeeper Billy Thompson was not shaken by having to take the pitch as he made a huge effort only four minutes after coming on to keep the match scoreless. The Switchbacks had their best opportunity in the first half in the 40th minute as Captain, Luke Vercollone nearly scored his first of the season but San Antonio defense was able to come up with a critical block and then Rony Argueta's rebound shot was saved by Josh Ford marking his 6th in the first half alone.
The second half proved to be similar to the first as both teams continued to apply pressure but neither back line caving into the pressure. In the 59th minute the Switchbacks were finally able to break through as Mike Seth chested a pass toward Marty Maybin who made the best of a crucial error by Josh Ford for San Antonio, who left a wide open net for Maybin to bag his team leading third goal of the season. Billy Thompson continued to play well recording 6 saves on his way to his first clean sheet of the 2016 season.
"You always have to prepare like you're going to play" said Thompson of subbing in for the injured Gorrick, "I took advantage of the opportunity and played well and go the 3 points."
The Switchbacks have now earned 9 points through their first four games of the 2016 campaign.
"We are happy with the 3 points and keeping another clean sheet." Said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We still have a lot of improvement to go which is a good sign. Need to work hard again this week to keep getting better."
The Switchbacks will return home next Saturday, April 30th as they take on Real Monarchs SLC for the Switchbacks High School Classic.
